Honda Accord is all new for 2018

Popular sedan is completely redesigned for 2018

TORRANCE, Calif. - Honda showed off its all-new Accord Friday, touting it as the most fun-to-drive and premium Accord ever.

This is the 10th generation of the popular car and features plenty of technology and gizmos, including a heads-up display and a center touch-screen with a volume knob and a scrolling knob. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard, as is a whole suite of safety features that the company calls Honda Sensing.

The car is a little shorter than the previous generation, but the wheelbase is actually about 2 inches longer, which should translate into a smoother ride. Honda leaders also say the body is lighter and more rigid than the 2017 model.

For the first time in many years, the new Accord will only be offered with 4-cylinder engines. In a move to improve efficiency, the company is dropping the V-6 option.

The company says its new 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine is actually more powerful than the previous V-6, generating 252 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. There will also be a 1.5-liter engine for 192 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque, plus a gas-electric hybrid option.

Transmission choices include a continuously variable transmission, a 6-speed manual or 10-speed automatic.

One thing missing from the 2018 Accord lineup is the coupe option.

The 2018 Accord will have plenty of competition when it goes on sale later this year, as Toyota recently started production of its all-new Camry, and SUVs continue to erode at traditional sedan sales. Prices have not yet been announced.
